Bret Hatt has 29 years of Harley Davidson & Indian Motorcycle experience. Hatt has always had a love for anything with two wheels. At the age of 14, he built a bicycle shop off the side of his dad’s house. He repaired bikes for some of his friends, painted them put long forks on them, and made little choppers out of them. He loved to do wheelies all the way down the block. At the age of 15, he remembers thinking that someday he was going to have a motorcycle shop. He got his first Harley at the age of 22, the same year he had his son, Bret Jr. His mentors at the time were real old school bikers that built some nice old school bikes. A 1946 FL Knuckle-Shovel was his first Harley. After owning a BSA, Honda 350, and a Bull Taco 250 he knew his love was for the American made Harley Davidsons.
Hatt worked with his dad as a teen hanging garage doors. At age 20, he got a job at Bethlehem Steel building barges. He also was a boiler maker and a certified welder at United States Steel, where he worked on the Alaskan pipeline.
1987 — At age 28, Hatt opened his first full service motorcycle shop in a barn called Hillybilly Harly’s in Cotati, CA and then moved to Ignacio/Novato in Marin County.
1990 — Hatt opened a shop in San Rafael, CA.
1991-2000 — Hatt moved his shop to downtown Forest Knolls where he had build a lot of real old school bikes.
2000-2005 — San Anselmo was the winning shop on the Miracle Mile at the time that bikes were “in.” His shop was voted best motorcycle shop 2003 & 2004 by the Pacific Sun & Bohemian. Advertised on television every week on channel 26 in Marin. Hatt had finally arrived.
The current shop is Hatt’s Motorcycles in Forest Knolls on SFD he has about 2,000 sq feet with, again, a full-service machine shop.
